We’ve said it so many times and we will say it again, a custom designed trade show display will do amazing things for your sales. With a look that is the perfect match for your business, there is no limit to what can be accomplished thanks to some help from Godfrey’s amazing design team. While our displays will definitely get people in to see what you are all about, what happens next is up to you. This week we are going to focus on ways to better ensure that every customer is a success by reviewing some different techniques anyone in sales should know.
Today we are going to focus on the voice; after that custom design display has wowed them and the customer is ready to hear your pitch, the way you speak and use your words can lead to the beginning of a beautiful friendship or to a quick not interested.
Tone- Anyone that has ever had a significant other in their life knows that an incorrect tone can change a discussion into an argument at the drop of a hat. So many times sales people mess up by not choosing how they say their words properly. If you’ve been told before that you have a bad tone or need some advice, ask a friend that is willing to be honest with you and take their advice on how to change.
The pitch- Have you ever tried to learn something from someone that ums and uhs the whole time? Um today I would like to uhhh tell you um about uhhh this new product that ummm will save you money. The pitch is everything in sales and it needs to be practiced continuously until it can be delivered without a bunch of ums and uhhhs getting in the way. Be careful though all that practice might make you sound like you are reading from a script and that could cause you to fail to make a connection with the customer.
Emphasize and be energized- I’m a loud talker. I can’t help but shout everywhere I go. For some people this can be a big problem as nobody wants to get the sense they are being yelled at. Pay attention to the overall sound in the room and adjust your voice to fit that environment. At the same time remember to emphasize and stress those words that are meant to have an impact. The last thing you want it to bore someone away from your booth because you mumbled and spoke in a monotone voice.

I’m not a huge fan of reality shows, but I must admit finding myself addicted to such cooking competitions as Top Chief, Chopped, and Iron Chief. There’s something about making the perfect meal that keeps me striving with every dinner to do better than the last. For the most part my love of cooking isn’t about the taste (though it’s no secret that all chiefs love to eat) but instead at least for me it’s all about the flavors. There’s something about the way basic ingredients have a way of coming together to create a unique dish. A dash of salt, a touch of thyme, pinch of dill….added at just the right time without forcing it; as the ingredients begin to come together they form something greater than the sum of their parts.
If you think about it a successful tradeshow is a lot like a one of a kind meal. Just as a cook must begin by pulling together the basics of the recipe such as garlic, flour, chicken; so too does an event planner as they prepare for what types of materials to take, the size and shape of the display they will need, what type of approach to take that will ensure they get people’s attention. A successful trade show isn’t put together overnight no more than a seven course meal is done within minutes. What designs will get you the most attention? Should you go with the custom designed fabric structure or will a kiosk suit your needs more?
If you are getting ready to hit the trade show circuit, maybe you’ve been asking yourself lately as to what ingredients you will need to get the job done? Thankfully Godfrey is here to help and we’ve got just what you need to cook up a successful tradeshow. With tons of designs to choose from and a design team eager to help, it’s time you took the next step in the process and let us help make your next event a success.

Wouldn’t be nice if picking out a trade show display was as easy as going through the line at a fast food restaurant? You drive up to the menu. The lady comes over the microphone and asks what you want. Not sure as to what you are in the mood for, you ask for a few moments to make a final decision. Maybe you would like a grand format fabric display with custom logos. It’s been awful cold outside lately, it might be nice to have a portable banner to sit out front and save you from having to pay someone to stand out there for you. You’ve got that fantastic video demo that really catches everyone’s attention, a custom kiosk with built in video/audio inserts would be perfect….finally you make your decision. “I’ll take the Spacestation pop-up with a pedestal and information booth on the side.” All that is left now is to drive forward and load everything in the back.
This may seem like a pipe dream, but believe it or not when you order from Godfrey the reality is that it’s not too far a stretch. When you click on the Godfrey Design Gallery the first thing you will notice is a menu to the left with several different design elements to choose from including:
*Counters, pedestals, and sampling stands
*Fabric structures & Fabric Graphics
*Video & Audio Displays
*Props & Games
*Green & Eco-Friendly Displays
Once you determined what size you want from choices such as inlay displays, island displays, table tops, or showroom & retail environments the next step is to figure out what size. Then it’s on to literally hundreds of options each giving you yet another idea at just what can be accomplished by Godfrey. A personal project manager is waiting to help you get started while a designer is eager to step you through the entire process including regular updates and pictures via email. Still not sure what you want? No problem as we are always willing to work with you to make sure you get exactly the display to fit your needs. How’s that for fast service?

With the state of the market these days if you are company that makes their living off of the leads gathered from trade shows, then you need to be sure that you treat each event as a learning experience. Regardless of whether or not you’ve been to only a couple of shows or two hundred, everyone has something to learn and every vendor has something to teach. To this end today we are going to discuss the importance of a trade show packet and some of the things you can do at your next event that might help you down the road.
Simply put a trade show packet is a series of observations that require you to pay attention to not only how you did, but how other vendors faired. Before you can get started though make sure that you’ve got away to keep the notes so that you can review them from time to time; the last thing you want is to be stuck jotting a bunch of random thoughts down on a bunch of scrap paper.
What worked for you? To say that a trade show can be hectic at times is definitely an understatement. We all know what it’s like when you are slammed and how things can turn around at the drop of a hat. Once you have a moment to catch your breath though, look around your booth and see what all the fuss was about. Did you sell out of anything? Was there a specific style you ran out of first or that people were asking about? Was your display set up to handle traffic accordingly or could you have setup a different way. Did you get any compliments on your exhibit?
What didn’t work for you? Every presentation has its flaws. Even the most customized of displays can miss if the way you present it is wrong. Delivery is just as important as any popup display, portable signage, or custom logo you surround yourself with. If you come across as rude, arrogant, or uncaring all that attention that your exhibit brought will quickly go the other way. In the same respect if you’re not clear and to the point as to what it is you are offering, those that visit your booth may not stick around to find out. A custom display will bring the crowd to you, but it’s your job to keep them there.
What did other vendors do? You shouldn’t have to look too far to see what other vendors at the show are doing. Take a walk and make a few mental notes as to what others are doing. Is anyone using games such as a money booth, Frisbee toss, or Plinko that are attracting a lot of attention? Maybe someone is getting a good response from a photo prop. Whatever the other guys are doing compare that to your own display and see who you think comes out on top. Maybe there are things that other vendors did well that may fit in nicely with your style or maybe you will see some things you are doing also which could be turning customers away.
A trade show packet is kind of like an exit interview you conduct with yourself. Take some time to really think about what happened during your trip, what your impressions were of the event as a whole, and what you might do differently your next time out.

Over the course of researching what I want to share on this blog over the course of a week, I continuously catch myself thinking that I’ve seen everything that Godfrey can do only to be surprised yet again by something amazing that I never knew about. This week alone I’ve shared with you the perfect tent for outdoor events and gone over some of the benefits of offering your trade show visitors a chance to sit and take a break in a set of classic looking scoop-back seats. I’m always bragging about our pop-up displays and grand fabric structures. From poster frames, to table wraps, to LED displays, to inflatable props; Godfrey just never seems to run out of designs to meet your needs. What you may not know is that my latest discovery of what Godfrey offers just might change the way you plan your next trade show event.
Before I share my new find I want to discuss just how easy it is to start working on your custom display. The first thing you need of course is an idea. Do you want something large and elaborate or are you looking for something small that can quickly be taken down to carry with you? Once you have a basic idea of what you want it’s time to meet your personal project manager. This is the person who will help you take your idea and turn it into a fully customized display. Together you will work out the basics, come up with a concept, and from there everything is sent to our design team. The design staff takes what you and your project manager have done so far and turns those ideas into something tangible that will be submitted to you for approval. Once this is complete it’s just a matter of time before your custom display is built. During this process you will be notified regularly about what progress is being made and you will even receive pictures of how everything is coming together.
Next comes that amazing discovery I mentioned above that just proves that Godfrey is the best at what they do. Along with your display you will have access to a support manager that will actually accompany you to the tradeshow and help you setup your booth. That’s right! Godfrey actually has a team of job managers that will show up and make sure everything is installed just as you ordered. And it doesn’t stop there! In b
etween shows you can even ship us back the display where we can then service, refresh the graphics, or even upgrade your design!
From start to finish and long after the show is over, Godfrey is here to give you the tools you need to make your next event the largest ever! Call us now and get your project manager working on a new design today!!

Last week in a post titled “The Right Person For The Job” I talked about how something as tantalizing as Fillet Mignon would appear to be plain trash if it were to be served to you on a garbage can lid. Now in that post I was using this example as way to make sure you are employing people who have a certain degree of charm and personality, but the same can be said about how you choose to show off your product as well. You could essentially have one of those products that becomes synonymous with a entire line of products from any number of manufacturers (Coke, TiVo, and Matchbox Cars are examples of this), but because you did not choose the best way to promote your idea nobody ever takes notice. It’s those early decisions about how you will choose to bring your product to the consumer that make all the difference in the world.
Understandably this isn’t an easy process and not something to jump into. You want to start with a very broad idea of what you want and then begin to eliminate choices. Is your event outside? Do you need something like a large tent or would a smaller Mushroom style kiosk do the trick? Are you looking for something that can easily be packed up and taken to the next location or does portability not matter? Maybe you are just looking to spice up your office front. Will there be some type of attendant with a desk stationed there? Is privacy going to be a concern? How about signage? Were you thinking about something that may possibly hang from the ceiling or maybe you’d rather just have a stand that would allow people to pick up literature as they pass by?
All of these questions and we haven’t even considered graphics yet. Are you looking for something with bright colors or is something more professional what you had in mind? Do you have a specific logo that needs to be included or are you looking to come up with a new theme unlike anything you have done before? Are considering renting a booth to start out or are you ready to fully customize a display of your own?
Finding what is right for you and your products can be time consuming process, but one that is fulfilling and often very profitable. Knowing what works best for you and what you want makes all the difference in the world. The Godfrey Group understands this and that’s why we’ve created a Design Library that lets you start narrowing your ideas down and even save them so that you can come back later after you’ve researched what you want a little further. Don’t hesitate. Login in today!!

Wednesday I spoke about what to look for in a person you are sending out to work a trade show when you can’t make it yourself. Essentially you need somebody who is trustworthy, presentable, able to follow your lead, and can solve any problems that may arise along the way. While all of these things are great qualities to have in any employee, regardless of whether we are talking trade shows or retail stores, it’s also important to remember to send them on the road with a few supplies that will help them survive the grueling days ahead. Let’s face it, trade shows and conventions are never easy and if you’re the one having to stand at a kiosk all day talking to everyone that walks by, it can be downright brutal on even the most gung-ho individual. In order to avoid some of this fatigue and possibly keep a steady roll call of people willing to travel every weekend, a zip-lock bag containing a few simple items could save you tons of grief:
Aspirin-Like I said above, trade shows can be tough on anyone. Often you leave in the late afternoon, grab a couple hours sleep at some random hotel, are up by 5 a.m and work till 8 p.m. Throughout the day you can expect to meet hundreds of people while music and crowd noise blare in the background. Headaches are going to happen and a little help to easy the pain will come in real handy.
- Caffeine-Throw in some money for coffee, maybe a couple bottles of 5-hr Energy, some chocolate covered coffee beans….whatever your choice just remember that when things are pop’n and the crowd has got you covered up things are great, but when things die down you’re going to need something to keep you in the game.
- Ant-Acids- Nobody eats good on the road. The food is grease, spicy, covered in batter. The stress levels are just as high as the expectations and all of it leaves your body feeling all out of sorts. A roll of Tums will go a long way to help calm your nerves and fight all that fattening food.
- Breath Mints-This is a no-brainer. Nobody wants to get up close and personal to talk about your latest gadget if you have bad breath.
- Band-Aids- Paper cuts are an occupational hazard and can cost sales if someone were to walk up to find you bleeding all over the place. A few band-aids, maybe some antibiotic ointment, and if possible a bandage should help control the situation and save you some cash.
- Break-Time- You can’t put this one in a bag, but it’s just at vital as all the others. Don’t expect yourself or anyone else for that matter to stand behind a display all day and stay fresh. Make it known that once or twice a day it’s okay to get out and mingle through the crowd. Not only will this give you a lay of the land to see what others are promoting, but it will allow you to make connections with those that may not otherwise stop by your booth or even know you are there.
Part of being a vendor at a trade show means that you are required to man the fort from dusk to dawn with little or no respite. As hard and rewarding as it is though, why not make life easier on yourself and your employees by sending along a bag containing a few simple items that will make the trip more bearable. It’s a like our moms used to say, “A little help goes a long way”.

I’m a NO person. Regardless of the question, forget the circumstances; I don’t care what the product is….my first answer is always NO. That two word response is my first line of defense. It saves me money. It keeps me from getting ripped off. It may stop some good times from coming my way, but it also has saved my life a few times. NO gives me time to think. Time for my sub-concious to chew on things and figure out the Pro’s Vs Con’s. I come from a long line of No people. My father and his father are no people. My brother is a Yes person. He’s the black sheep of the family. Never met a gimmick or opportunity he didn’t dive head first into.
Although I’m a self proclaimed NO what I really am is a closet MAYBE person. I can be convinced that the latest must have product or idea is the real deal, I just need to do it on my own time without somebody being in my face. I like pamphlets, literature, even DVD’s that I can take with me to watch later when I don’t feel pressured. YES and NO people are vocal about their opinions. MAYBE consumers are too busy doing our research to say how we feel right a way. You can grab our attention with custom graphics, made to order designs, and interactive displays, but it’s the literature that gets us in a mood to spend our money. We love information booths that allow us to pick up a couple brochures so we can read up on a new idea in the safety of our own homes. Forget the clowns, flashing lights, and give-aways; what we want is a video or audio demonstration that we can catch from the sidelines.
This in not to say that MAYBE’s can’t be turned into YES people if the moment or pitch is just right. The first time I saw my wife was a YES moment. The first time I heard my favorite band was a YES moment. Just the idea of a tablet computer has me screaming YES as loud as I can. All it takes is for someone or something to hit that button that I didn’t even know existed for me to devote my entire existence to obtaining the latest object of my affection. Whether it be an iPod, a 3-D television, or bagel maker, I may say NO on the outside, but I’m already talking MAYBE on the inside.
What kind of response does your display elicit? Is your design one that has the ability to turn even the most rigid of NO’s into YES consumers? Are you giving the MAYBE’s the facts they need to feel educated? If you’re ready to turn all your potential customers in YES consumers, contact Godfrey now and let us show you how the experts do it!!

If you’ve spent any amount of time in one of our nation’s fine never ending malls, then chances are you’ve probably been verbally assaulted by some over eager kiosk worker attempting to talk you into buying anything from a stake in a time share to hand carved garden gnomes. Not to knock these guys (after all everyone started somewhere), but trying to scalp me with a remote control helicopter while I’m on my way to the GAP isn’t the way to get me to fork over my hard earned cash. For that matter macing me with fresh linen body spray isn’t going to do the trick either. If you’re like me and you’re tired of these guerilla warfare tactics, then you know the way to reach my wallet is through my mind not by getting in my face. As a society we are constantly bombarded by image after image all designed to create all of these spontaneous purchases that leave us feeling empty moments after the money is gone. What we need though….what really gets us motivated to invest in something new is when companies speak to us with intellect and respect.
The Godfrey Group has created a line workstations especially designed to give us consumers exactly what we want; a simple straight forward modern twist on the traditional kiosk that speaks volumes without knocking you over the head with crazy antics. These workstations are offered in a variety of styles including: the Truss Workstation featuring a monitor mount, oval pedestal base, and backlit header frame; the 84″ Truss Monitor Station with its laminate base and two counters perfect for holding all your promotional materials; plus the ultra modern TechForm Video Display System featuring amazing graphics and tons of accessories.
If you’re thinking about setting up shop in a nearby mall before you do something drastic like hiring a killer kiosk worker to invade the personal space of a thousand fleeing shoppers, consider a more subtle approach. By choosing something from Godfrey’s line of cutting edge workstations you’ll be doing what those other guys can’t….you’ll be attracting customers instead of distracting them.
